In today’s modern world it’s all too easy to be worn out with the responsibilities of parenthood, work, home life and other personal and relationship issues that this concept of reading to children from an early age is often left out to save time, the common misconception being that as a baby the child will neither understand your words nor follow any story you have to read or tell.

Children need to hear your spoken language, the inflection and the intonation of your voice so that they too may learn to speak themselves, to form words of their own, to be able to express their opinions, answer your questions, interact with you – their parents on a daily basis.

Reading is one of my personal favourite past-times, there are so many wonderful authors and creative writers out there. There is so much inspiration and motivation to be gained from reading stories and books. There truly is something out there for everyone, and every child to benefit from.

Among them were 3 students who achieved 5 A-level passes at grade A – a truly remarkable acheivement and no doubt in response to their determination, hard work and support of their families and friends. They included Ruhul Choudbury from my home town Truro who is to study clinical science at the Peninsula Medical School, Oliver Bent from Penzance who is off to Oxford to study Engineering Science and James Freeman from Helston who is off to the University of Bath to study maths. I say congratulations to all three of you  as I’m sure many others will agree.

Another incredible achievement was that of Hannah Richards from Ludgvan who achieved three grade As despite being involved in a near fatal car accident in the year. Following the accident, Hannah spent three days in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospital where my wife is a nurse and where Hannah underwent five seperate operations to repair the physical damage she sustained in the accident. She also received physiotheraphy treatment and re-learned how to walk. Despite her terrible injuries and trauma, she was able to return to her studies, astounding her family, college tutors and friends with her determination to not let the accident or her injuries set her back or deter her from achieving her goal of going to university. Hannah achieved three grade As in Law, Psychology and Sociology and is now off to Cardiff university to study pyschology. Congratulations Hannah, when you’ve finished your studies and if you want to return to Cornwall to live and work, I’ll make room for you in my company, exactly the sort of person I would love to have working with me. enjoy your studies and your time in Wales, I loved the place when I used to go there on holidays!

I’ve been a big fan of Tony Hawks (the author, not the skateboarder) for quite a while, ever since picking up a copy of Round Ireland with a Fridge. I’ve since read Playing The Moldovians at Tennis and One Hit Wonderland and love both his comedic writing style and the fact that all his stories are based on real life events, usually drunken bets with his mates. If you haven’t read any of his work and you enjoy funny tales then get your hands on some of his work for your next holiday or vacation. I promise you won’t be dissapointed…

The Accidental Billionaires is the latest book by Ben Mezrich, one of my favourite authors of the moment. It charts the founding and creation of Facebook and how it came to be what it is today. It’s a fascinating insight into how an idea can grow into a behemoth in just a short matter of time. While not entirely endorsed by the owner and supposed creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, it’s still a great read and I would highly recommend it.
